The IEAS was established in 1978 by Dr. Kang In-duk, former Minister of Unification, South Korea, for twenty-six years it has dealt with issues related to East Asia, focusing on the Korean peninsula and its surrounding powers

The institute has provided knowledges in various aspects of the Korean peninsula from a Koreans' view. It has given unique perspectives, enabled readers to understand the critical and delicate matters of the region through the eyes of Korean.

In the new millennium, the IEAS will continue its effort to provide in-depth analysis concerning the Korean peninsula.

Major publications of IEAS are the monthly journal "Kukdong-Munjae" (Korean version of East Asian Review) and East Asian Review, quarterly. The institution also publishes "Euhrinih Segae" (Children's World in Korean) for educating Korean children to prepare them for the unified Korea in future.

East Asian Review (EAR) was first published in 1974 and was resumed in 1989 with the beginning of the post-Cold War era. Since its first volume was published, EAR has conducted in-depth studies on the issues related to the East Asia, especially on the Korean peninsula and its surrounding powers.

Currently, the institute is pursuing a three-year project, “Inter-Korean Negotiations, 1972-2002: A Comprehensive Historical Analysis,” funded by Korea Research Foundation. Participants are Dr. Kang In-duk, Dr. Song Jong-whan, and Mr. Lim Chae-wook.
